Peru Tours – Stunning Mountains, Ancient Archeological Sites, and Intimate Cultural Experiences

Discover the best adventure tours in Peru! Apurimac Adventures combines treks through the spectacular Andes Mountains, visits to archeological treasures, and intimate Quechua cultural experiences in our tour offerings. Our tours are private, small, and flexible, and we have numerous options to get you off the beaten path. We were founded & are managed by a Quechua guide from Choquequirao (his family used to own the archeological site!) and our tours reflect his great love for Peru.

About Juan

Born in the tiny mountainside village of Marampata, Juan is a native Quechua who grew up walking the Incan trail in daily life, playing soccer amongst the ruins of next door Choquequirao, and helping his father manage horses for the government teams as they first began to excavate its ruins. In the process, Choquequirao was discovered to be an ancient Incan city larger and more intricate than Macchu Picchu itself. Recognizing this treasure in his own backyard, Juan resolved to become a guide and introduce the

world to the wonders of his culture and the beautiful lands he knows like the back of his hand.

“Juan was not just the best guide to introduce me to the exquisite beauty of the región, but his hospitality and care for my son and me made him the best guide to introduce me to the Peruvian people as a whole.” – Client Daniel H. (2023)

Gifted with a heart of genuine hospitality, Juan’s goal is indeed to make every guest ultimately feel like family, from the moment they arrive (when he picks them up from the airport in Cusco), to the moment they are bid a fond farewell. And this very often results in not just repeat clients, but lifelong friendships.

“I have trekked in the Sierras, the Alps, and the Himalaya, and these are the most beautiful mountains I’ve seen, particularly the stretch from Choquequirao to Yanama. Beyond the stunning vistas, it was an amazing trip because of Juan himself, who is passionate about sharing his country and its history with visitors. His enthusiasm combined with his humble kindness, his flexibility, and his devotion to quality made for a delightful time. I don’t normally like to do the same trip twice, let alone three times, but I went in 2016, again in 2018, and AGAIN in 2021, and it was just as magical the third time through!” – Lisa S., 2024

Juan’s hospitality comes out not only in a pleasant and encouraging demeanor (especially helpful on the tougher climbs!) and in his communication (Juan fluently speaks English, Spanish, and Quechua), but informs every aspect of his planning.  Juan excels at planning and executing custom guided trips for his clients, not only taking care of every detail of the trip itself, but also working with his clients to determine their comfort level with the strenuous hiking levels that the steep Andes demand.  This allows Juan to plan breaks and timelines accordingly so the guests have the greatest enjoyment.

Juan is devoted to his beautiful wife Zenayda, and their three children – Anthony (10), Linda (5), and Estrella (1 year old).

Apurimac Adventures is the only tour company founded and run by an indigenous Quechua guide from Choquequirao, Juan Covarrubias. Juan’s family owned the Choquequirao ruins for more than 100 years before the Peruvian government took over ownership to develop the ruins. If you visit Choquequirao, you can interact with his extended family who still live along the trail. With extensive connections among the Quechua communities of the Cuzco region, many of his treks incorporate cultural interactions unavailable with other companies.

Juan initiated the Heritage Trail project to benefit Quechua families along the Choquequirao trail, and trekking with Apurimac Adventures will allow you to see the completed and in-progress projects. If you wish, you can volunteer your time for the benefit of the project families.
