Salkantay Trek 4 Day
Description:
Named by National Geographic as one of the top 20 hikes in the world, this trek offers 3 days of hiking/camping through the magnificent Salkantay snow-capped mountains and 1 day exploring Machu Picchu. This is an alternate route to Machu Picchu which offers quieter campsites and fewer travelers than the Inca Trail Trek. You will pass through tropical valleys, past crystal blue lakes, and over imposing mountain passes. The views are stunning as you pass glacier-covered mountains such as Salkantay (6,275m/20,576ft), and the nighttime sky is filled with thousands of stars. The trek will end with a visit to the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu.

Itinerary – Salkantay Trek 4 Day
DAY 1: Cusco – Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Arrayanniyoq
We pick you up at 4:30am from your hotel to drive about 3 hours by private transport to Soraypampa where we will have a hearty breakfast. A 3-hour walk will bring us to Soyroqocha where we will have our lunch with a beautiful view of the snow-capped mountain Salkantay (6275m/20576ft). After lunch we will continue climbing to Apacheta Pass, the highest point on this trek at 4,630m/15,190ft. We will then descend to Arrayanniyoq (3,000m/9,843ft) where we will camp for the night.
DAY 2: Arrayanniyoq – Chaullay – Collpapampa – Lucumbamba
On the second day of our trek, we will pass through valleys and have wonderful views of waterfalls and tropical plants. We will eat lunch in a spot called La Playa before continuing to Lucumbamba where we will take a coffee tour with a local family and then camp for the night.
DAY 3: Lucumbamba – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes
Our day begins with a 3 hour uphill climb on an original Inca trail through the Andean cloud forest to the Puncuyoc pass before a short descent to Llactapata, an Inca city located at 2,700m/8,906 ft. From here we can enjoy beautiful views of the Inca city of Machu Picchu, as well as the towering Wayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains. After a 2-hour descent to the hydroelectric plant, we will have lunch and catch our train to Aguas Calientes where we will stay overnight in a hotel.
DAY 4: Machu Picchu – Cusco
We rise very early in the morning to catch one of the first buses to Machu Picchu. This allows us to enjoy the magnificent city as the sun is rising and before crowds accumulate at the ruins. After a guided walking tour in this spectacular, ancient city of the Incas, you are able to explore the mysterious city by yourselves. If you wish, you can also climb Huayna Picchu (2720m/8890ft) for a spectacular view of the ruins. This costs an extra $45 USD and you will need to book online at least a couple of months before your visit to get a coveted permit. At the end of your Machu Picchu visit, you will take the train to Ollantaytambo and then private transport back to your hotel in Cusco.
