Our founder, Juan Covarrubias Ccaihuari, is a Quechua from Choquequirao, so Choquequirao is our stomping ground! His ancestral family has lived in these mountains for over 150 years – long before Hiram Bingham arrived for the first time in 1909. When Juan was young, his family still owned the archeological site. He and his cousins played soccer on the plaza and explored the unexcavated city for fun.
